More than 30,000 South Florida homes went to foreclosure

By Carol Hines·

Banks seized more than 30,000 homes in South Florida through foreclosure in 2009

This foreclosure rate is a 16 percent increase from 2008, according to a new report from CondoVultures.com.

Lenders filed 97,000 foreclosure notices in 2009. Obviously, not all of those homeowners ended up losing the properties.

“Lenders repossessed an average of 83 properties per day in South Florida in 2009,” Peter Zalewski, a principal with Bal Harbour-based Condo Vultures said in a statement.

“The number of bank repossessions could have been higher if the South Florida court system was not overwhelmed with foreclosures right now. The courts and government are searching for creative measures – including online auctions and required discussions between borrowers and lenders at the early stages of mortgage defaults – to stem the foreclosure problem.”
